Why Your LinkedIn® Profile Should Be Updated Even If You Are NOT Looking For A Job…

LinkedIn® is one of the fastest growing social websites and the discussion is no longer, do you have an account but rather, is it up-to-date? Many consider LinkedIn® as a crucial tool for job seekers, but even if you are not looking for a new position you should still maintain your account.

LinkedIn® is utilized by many business professionals (over 147 million and growing!) and it is a useful tool to stay connected, create new connections, and open new doors. Keeping your profile up-to-date allows other users to understand what you do, what you have done, and possibly, begin a relationship with you. This may be in the form of a prospective job opportunity, a connection into a specific company, or a potential business partnership.

Another reason to keep your LinkedIn® profile up-to-date is because in this day and age, you just never know how safe you are in your current position. Having that already built up network is a nice safety net because you never know who may know of job opening. Also, you would not be scrambling to build references for your job search or feel you’re starting from scratch in beginning your social media profile. It is well known that recruiters and hiring managers scour LinkedIn® so you might as well put your best foot forward!

If you have not been too active with LinkedIn® previously, you do want to tread with some caution because if you suddenly take an interest in updating your account you may cause alarms with your employer. Employers may notice your change in activity level and begin to wonder if you are starting to pursue other opportunities. There are ways around this potential issue including:

  1. Turning off your activity broadcasts.
  2. Being more consistent with your updates so an increase does not sound alarms.
  3. Mention to your employer that you are dabbling in LinkedIn® to strengthen business opportunities/networking.

To turn off your activity broadcasts, simply go to your account settings in the top, right hand corner under your name and click ‘settings.’ Once you have re-typed in your password your settings page will open. Under “Profile” you will see the option:

  • Turn on/off your activity broadcasts

Select the first option and uncheck the box that is for letting people know when you change your profile, make recommendations, or follow companies. LinkedIn® has the following description: Note: You may want to turn this option off if you’re looking for a job and don’t want your present employer to see that you’re updating your profile.

Staying on-top of your LinkedIn® profile takes nothing more than an hour a month if you are not wishing for it to be too demanding and the time is truly well vested for the day you may need those connections or opportunities.
